MATH OF BATTLE

← Return to Chapter Selector

When you use an attack, you give damage to the other player's monster. We use little tokens or dice called Damage Counters to keep track of the math.

Every single damage counter equals 10 damage.

Interactive Practice: Adding Damage!

Your attack does 30 damage. How many damage counters do you need?

10, 20, 30 → You need 3 counters!

Subtracting HP

When your monster takes damage, you have to subtract that number from your HP. This is a great way to practice subtraction.

Imagine your monster has 60 HP. Another monster attacks it for 20 damage.

60 − 20 = 40!

Your monster has 40 HP left.

When HP Hits Zero

If a monster's HP drops to zero, it is Knocked Out. It goes to the discard pile, and (in a real match) your opponent usually gets to take a Prize Card. We will practice the prize step in the final chapter — for now, focus on the math story: damage goes up, HP goes down until the battle is decided.

Double-check with a grown-up how your group handles healing. Some Trainer cards can remove damage counters and make the math go backwards in a happy way. Whenever healing happens, count out loud together so the table agrees.

👨‍🏫 [Parent Prompt]

Bring out physical coins, dice, or counters. Ask: "If my attack does 40 damage, can you count out the right number of counters? Now, if my monster has 50 HP and takes 10 damage, how much HP do I have left?" Celebrate correct calculations with a high-five!
