EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING

← Return to Chapter Selector

Executive functioning is your brain's ability to plan ahead, remember what happened, and make decisions under pressure. In the Pokémon TCG, this means tracking multiple pieces of information at once: what cards are in your discard pile, what your opponent has played, and what you need to draw next turn.

Working Memory in Battle

Your working memory is like a mental whiteboard. During a game, you're constantly writing and erasing information on it:

  • What's in my discard pile? — If you've discarded 3 of your 4 Boss's Orders, the last one is critical.
  • What has my opponent played? — If they used their only healing card, you know they can't heal again.
  • What are my prize cards? — If you haven't seen one of your key cards, it might be trapped in your prizes.
  • What do I need next turn? — Planning one turn ahead is good. Planning two or three turns ahead is championship-level play.

The Discard Check

At the start of every turn, before you draw, glance at your discard pile. Ask yourself: "What resources have I already used? What do I have left?" This single habit will make you a dramatically better player.

📝 [Educator Note]

Executive functioning skills developed through TCG play transfer directly to academic contexts: planning essays, managing homework schedules, and solving multi-step math problems. Encourage your child to verbalize their thought process during games — this strengthens metacognitive awareness.
