Resource Management is one of the fundamental skills that separates casual players from competitive ones. At its core, it means managing your resources — energy, Pokémon, and Supporter cards — so you have an efficient supply to last you throughout the entire game.

Every card in your hand is a resource. Every card in your discard pile is a spent resource. The decisions you make about which cards to use and when to use them will determine whether you have the tools you need in the late game, when the match is on the line.

The best players don't just play the best card in their hand — they play the right card for the current game state.

🧪 Scenario: The Ultra Ball Decision

Let's say you play Unfair Stamp and you have it in your opening hand. You need to discard 2 cards from your hand to use Ultra Ball for an important Pokémon like a Meowth ex. You probably don't want to discard Unfair Stamp since you want to have a way to disrupt your opponent's hand later in the game.

However, if you're playing against a deck like Mega Lucario ex, and you have 2 Gravity Mountain in hand, then it's a safe pick to discard those off of Ultra Ball since Mega Lucario ex decks typically do not play any Stage 2 Pokémon that Gravity Mountain would be effective against.

🎯 Think Ahead

Before you discard a card, ask yourself: "Will I need this later?" and "Does my opponent's deck even care about this card?" Context is everything. A card that's critical in one matchup can be dead weight in another.

Key Principles

  • Know your matchup: The cards you preserve depend entirely on what your opponent is playing. Scout their deck early.
  • Don't over-commit: Playing every Supporter in your hand on turns 1-2 feels powerful, but it leaves you empty for the mid-game.
  • Track your discard: Mentally note what's already been used. If you've discarded 3 of your 4 Boss's Orders, that last one is precious.
  • Energy economy: Attaching energy to the wrong Pokémon early can cost you the game. Always attach to the Pokémon that advances your win condition.
