READING COMPANION

← Return to Chapter Selector

Advanced Pokémon cards contain complex conditional logic — "if X, then Y" statements that require careful reading and evaluation. This chapter helps your child decode these statements accurately.

What Your Child Is Learning

  • Identifying the condition (the "if" part) before determining the effect (the "then" part)
  • Reading card text precisely — one missed word can change the entire ruling
  • Boolean logic: a condition is either met or not met, with no in-between

💡 Coaching Tip

When your child reads a complex card, ask them to read it aloud twice. First time: identify the condition. Second time: determine what happens. This "parse before executing" habit is something professional programmers do every day.

🎓Academic Connection: Conditional Reasoning

If/then logic is the foundation of computer science and formal reasoning. Children who practice evaluating conditions — checking whether they're true before applying effects — develop the same logical thinking patterns used in programming, scientific hypothesis testing, and legal reasoning.

🎲 Try This at Home

Pick 5 cards with complex text. For each card, have your child write the condition on one sticky note and the effect on another. Then shuffle the sticky notes and try to match them back together. This reinforces the connection between condition and outcome.

When Kids Speed-Read

Slow is pro. Model touching each clause with a finger — adults do this at Championships too. Celebrate one perfect slow read more than three sloppy fast ones.
