AGES 5-8 · Junior

Parent-facilitated foundations in math, reading, and play

At this tier you read alongside your child. Every chapter introduces one concept at a time and names the skill while your child practices it. The pace is slow on purpose.

What your child learns at this tier

  • Skip-counting by tens through damage counters - the move damage is always in tens, so counting becomes a natural game habit.
  • Sight-word and early-decoding practice by reading card names, Trainer text, and attack descriptions aloud.
  • The DBAA turn loop (Draw, Bench, Attach, Attack) as a multi-step sequence your child can internalize.
  • Greater-than / less-than reasoning by comparing Hit Points across cards.
  • Sportsmanship and emotional regulation through wins, losses, and "good game" rituals.

Research emphasis for this tier

The full pedagogy story lives on How This Works. Here is what the Academy leans on for Junior.

Harvard Project Zero

Pedagogy of Play frames our Junior chapters. Children choose their team, explore card art, and feel ownership over the lesson.

NAEYC

Short text blocks (about 40 words), single-concept chapters, and explicit Parent Prompts follow NAEYC developmentally appropriate practice.

Reading Rockets

The co-reading rhythm in our [Parent Prompt] callouts mirrors shared-reading techniques that research ties to stronger emerging readers.
